TEMPERAMENT-BASED. EVIDENCE-INFORMED.

Four Lenses for Building Strong and Ready Teams

A temperament foundation and a shared language that strengthen Army resilience, communication, and leadership. Built on how people are wired, not just how they behave.

The distinction that matters

Most tools measure behavior. Four Lenses reveals temperament.

Behavior shifts with the room, the rank in front of you, and the stress of the moment. Temperament is the wiring underneath: what motivates a Soldier, what drains them, and how they respond when the pressure is real. Four Lenses starts there, which is why it holds up in the field and not only in the classroom.

Temperament made concrete

Four temperaments. One shared language.

Each lens describes how a person tends to be wired, not a box they are stuck in. Once a team can name the four, they can talk about difference without taking it personally.

Green
Competence
Wired for analysis, mastery, and the long view. Solves the problem under the problem.
Blue
Connection
Wired for people, harmony, and meaning. Reads the room and holds the team together.
Gold
Duty
Wired for structure, standards, and follow-through. Brings order and reliability.
Orange
Action
Wired for movement, adaptability, and results. Acts fast when the situation changes.

Evidence-informed

Built on how adults actually grow.

Four Lenses connects to Robert Kegan’s Constructive Developmental Theory, the research on adult development. That framework draws a clear line between low-maturity and high-maturity responses to the same situation. Two Soldiers with the same temperament can show up very differently depending on where they are in that growth. Four Lenses names the difference and points toward the Choice: the deliberate step from reaction to response.

Motivation
The why underneath the behavior, so feedback lands instead of bouncing off.
Maturity
The difference between a low-maturity reaction and a high-maturity response under stress.
The Choice
The deliberate move from reacting to responding, the heart of resilient leadership.

Where it goes to work

One foundation, three places it pays off.

S

Soldiers and individuals

Stronger resilience behaviors. A Soldier who understands their own wiring recovers faster, asks for what they need, and stops mistaking difference for disrespect.

T

Teams and leadership

Fewer avoidable frictions. Squads, sections, and command teams gain a shared language for feedback, conflict, and trust that holds under stress.

F

Families

Resilience does not stop at the gate. The same lens helps Soldiers and their families understand one another, which steadies the home front the mission depends on.

Plays well with others

A layer, not a replacement.

Four Lenses is not one more program competing for your training calendar. It is the foundation the other tools stand on. It gives your people a shared language first, so the resilience training and assessments your unit already uses land deeper and stick longer.

It scales

From command to squad, the same language scales.

The temperament that helps a commander read the room is the same one that helps a team leader steady a new Soldier. Four Lenses works top to bottom because it describes people, not positions. One language, every echelon.
